Coffee, Brunches, Dinners | Tests

Saturday, February 21st

It's been a long time since I have posted so I thought I would just do a quick update.

I've been pretty busy with school and social life lately; I've been going out a lot with friends and studying for tests coming up. I have three next week - two Monday alone, so I'm pretty busy with that as well.

In the past couple weeks, I have discovered a lot more food places in Austin that I have taken a liking to so I thought I'd just talk about them briefly.

First, my new favorite coffee spot: Vintage Heart coffee, off 11th street. It's a small place in kind of an awkward spot, and the lot is small, decorated with some cute plants and graffiti art on the exterior. Inside, however, the scene is modern, chic, and comfortable - ideal for a coffee date or studying or honestly anything in my opinion. I really love the atmosphere. In the past two weeks I have been there twice, and have tried three of their options, the vanilla latte, which is one of the best vanilla lattes I have tried in my time, the cortado, which was brought to me at work one day so it was a great pick-me-up, and the lavender latte which has to be my new favorite coffee drink anywhere. Their coffee is really well-made and it tastes very light, not too sweet, but has a really good coffee flavor. Honestly, this place is perfect for me. It fits my style too well.

I tried a noodle place close to campus called Daito, but realized I don't think I like udon noodles all that much... so while everyone said it was a really good place, I just kind of feel eh about it.

Last weekend was a really fun weekend. Friday I went shopping for Valentine's Day, then in the evening we went to Fogo de Chau. Something about me - I enjoy Fogo's salad bar / side dishes more than their meat, but the meat was absolutely amazing. The lamb especially. We ordered cheesecake for dessert, and afterwards, a friend from Pennsylvania flew in and we played cards with some friends.

Saturday, we went to Vintage Heart, then to Fabi & Rosi for dinner; this place is an adorable house downtown that serves European food and has a really wonderful homey yet classy feel to it. We all loved the atmosphere and the food was really good as well. Their steak came with the best fries I have ever tasted and we tried their appetizer platter which was an array of interesting foods. My friend tried their scallops and they were also really good. I feel like I chose too basic of a dish - it reminded me of pork katsu which I can make pretty well anyway..but it was still really good. It was a really nice time.

Appetizer: cannot remember what any of this was

Sirloin & garlic fries (his, best steak ever)

Schnitzel & Spätzle (mine)

After, we went to watch Kingsmen in the movie theatre; honestly, I wasn't a huge fan of the movie...not my kind of humor...its hype definitely led to disappointment for me. Nonetheless we had a good night.

Sunday morning, my future roommates and I went to a brunch spot called Blue Dahlia, which has a lot of good reviews. We originally wanted to go to South Congress Cafe but the wait time was around an hour and a half. Unfortunately, due to the marathon that day, it took us quite a while to get downtown, but the wait was worth it - the food was delicious. While waiting we visited a small jewelry shop next door and had fun roaming around their handmade necklaces and chic clothing. We each ordered a different tartine - mine was the prosciutto with mozzarella, pesto and sun dried tomatoes, which was a little difficult to eat but definitely good.

The other day I tried a place called Noble Sandwich on Burnet Road; I didn't get a photo of my sandwich, because I wasn't really feeling too well and it didn't look like anything too special, but it was very good. I tried the duck pastrami, and it was pretty good; their sandwiches come with some chips and pickled veggies, but I'm not a fan of the chips. My boyfriend tried their "Noble Pig" sandwich I believe, and added a fried egg and it was delicious. He doesn't like sandwiches usually, but this place made him enjoy one. My friend ordered their Knuckle sandwich and said it tasted really good. We were all quite full afterwards.

Other than all of this, I've been feeling under the weather this week, but been learning to cook some Korean dishes and having fun doing so. I've also been watching a couple animes - one called K-On, and one called Ouran High School Host Club... I usually don't watch anime, but because of a special someone I am starting to like these two.

Tuesday, I had another KUSA General Meeting, but due to homework being due the next day and my feeling sick, I left early to study. Wednesday I spent a lot of time studying for an art history exam Thursday, and wasn't nearly as prepared for it as I would have liked. I also had my first marketing exam last week, which I didn't feel confident about either, so I think I need to step it up a bit and study a little harder for these next exams.

I haven't been working out because of being busy; this will change hopefully.
