Running Again | LiNK Dinner

Sunday, March 8th

Saturday was productive for me; I woke up, went for a thirty minute run, made lunch and cleaned the apartment / did laundry, and organized my school things. I also started to apply for some internships that will hopefully land me one for the summer.

In the evening, I went to Hopdoddy for the first time - it was probably one of the best burgers I've had but the wait was around an hour. The line was wrapped around the building outside. Crazy popular. But it's an Austin classic so I needed to try it once in my life at least. I'll probably be back again to try their milkshakes which are apparently heavenly but yesterday I didn't really feel like adding the extra calories.

This morning I went to Whole Foods for breakfast and to pick up a cake for my friend's birthday, then had an officer meeting with my fellow KUSA members. Afterwards I ran for another thirty minutes and went to a dinner that the Liberty in North Korea organization at UT was holding.

The dinner was focused around a North Korean escapee who told his story about making it out of North Korea to South Korea and what his experiences were like. He said that it was one of the first times he's given this speech in English and would love to learn English more in-depth for the future.

One of the things he did mention was that when he reached South Korea he was surprised that television was 24 hours. In North Korea, apparently, they have one station that is monitored by the government and runs for 8 hours a day. It's really interesting to think that something so basic to our present society is something that people in the world live without, and are actually ignorant to.

He also mentioned that the first time he watched a South Korean film he was confused that the people lived in nice homes and ate well, when he was told in North Korea that South Koreans were oppressed and without adequate food and housing.

It was really touching to hear his story, and really opened my eyes about North Korea and how scary and real it is to escape. In school, we were never really taught in-depth about the Korean War, and I was never exposed to much propaganda about rescuing North Koreans. Here at UT, I always knew that LiNK existed and have many friends in the organization but this was my first real experience at one of their events so it was actually quite enlightening for me and made me appreciate some of the little luxuries that I have in life.

Pretty decent Korean food and dessert also made it a nice time. There was also a photobooth at the end so me and some friends decided to take some photos. I generally don't know how to stray from a simple smile in photos but my friends are more creative.

Tomorrow is another Monday...

Still counting down the days until Spring Break. Class and work from 9:30 to 5 tomorrow so I know I'm going to have a long day. Sunday nights are always somewhat depressing for me because after having a nice weekend I know I have to wake up and go to Accounting class tomorrow.

My current goal is to train for the Longhorn Run in April as I have mentioned before, and I think I am going to start hardcore training, or at least attempting to run at least thirty minutes a day. The 10K is around 6.25 miles, and currently I run around 3.25 a day, so I need to up my distance and also get used to running with hills rather than just the treadmill. So today, I did a couple intervals during my run, then increased the incline for the last ten minutes which was difficult but I accomplished it so I am proud of myself.

I am also going to start eating more healthy this week again- I think my body really needs good energy. I'm really just craving a good home-cooked meal. It will probably help my runs as well so that's part of my motivation.

Dreading waking up early tomorrow....but it is what it is.
